Garden of Thoughts, 2021. acrylic paint, acrylic pouring medium, alcohol ink, brass wire, embroidery, printed organza, tape transfer, and UV resin on canvas. 40 x 16".

A multi-media piece that takes from many different sources of inspiration. From our family garden, to Monet's Water Lilies, and to this season's trendiest food and drink magazines, this piece combines painting, sculpture, and multiple image transfer techniques.

From planning to execution, this labor-intensive project took over 2 full weeks to complete, no shortcuts allowed. Every petal and leaf is hand shaped with wire, then perfectly fitted with a material, and then finally assembled into every flower that pops out at the viewer. The name of this piece comes from the abundance of thought and reflection that occurred during the detailed and repetitive process of creation. Though majority of the concept was planned beforehand, a lot of the  creative process was improvised and innovated on-the-fly.

Family Recipe, 2020. stop motion, rotoscope animation, foam board, paper, polymer clay, acrylic paint, photoshop, procreate (iPad).

"Family Recipe" is a short film that connects cultural ecosystem and family dynamics with digital media in the form of animation and instant messaging. The kitchen setting speaks to family connections, common spaces, discussion, and the passing of traditions (such as recipes) through oral tradition, which is then paired with text messages, which are an everyday occurrence.  No matter how silly or mundane, texts are still a way to show that we are connected and safe.

Through the Forest, 2020. acrylic, gouache, polymer clay, wood, and aluminum wire on wood panel. 24 x 36 x 24 inches.

A piece illustrating synesthesia and the map of emotions, events, ideas, and time inside the mind of someone who hears colour, associates colour with emotion, and sees abstract ideas arranged in space. Islands of larger ideas and events are surrounded by smaller dashes of "the every day," and the "forest" arrangement shows their passage through time and space, as well as their connections to each other.

Same Address, 2019. gouache, colour pencil, ink on paper. 24 x 18 inches.

"Same Address" reflects on the artist's experience living in Toronto after moving to the city from a comfy and familiar home to a building where she knew no one. From sharing an address to people near and dear to her, to sharing an address with strangers who share nothing but a common address, it's interesting how people avoid interacting and are immersed in their own little worlds despite all living under one roof. Everyone is truly an island; people are distant, disconnected, and prioritize themselves as individuals.  People, in a way, have less limitations and will do anything to work their way upwards.

Monopoly, 2019. oil pastel and watercolor on paper. 26 x 20 inches.

This piece shows human influence/commercialization of natural environments. We act as if we are superior to everything on the planet; we move trees and bend the landscape to our benefit like game pieces. WE ARE NOTHING WITHOUT THE WORLD AROUND US.

In the Dark, 2019. acrylic paint and acrylic skins on braced wood panel. 36 x 24 inches.

This painting symbolizes uncertainty and a journey of self-discovery as a university student and up-and-coming athlete. With so many things going on, young people are put under pressure and many expectations to know who they are, or what they are doing. "In the Dark" aims to put this feeling of being lost and confused into a visual context through the use of imagery and colour.

It's All Up There, 2019. acrylic and gouache on canvas. 48 x 48 inches.

Inspired by the life of a competitive athlete, "It's All Up There" is a phrase commonly used by Yu's coach to reassure athletes and mentally prepare them to face the stress and anxiety of high performance Taekwondo. The piece gives insight into the process, memories, and emotional grounding associated with competition, as well as the lesser seen weights/burdens carried by top athletes in an abstract and tangible way.
